The Clay County Commission has announced the creation of the Clay County Landmarks Commission. This newly established five-member board will oversee efforts to restore, preserve, and promote the Historic Clay County Courthouse.
Built in 1902, the courthouse served as the county seat for more than seven decades before being replaced as the county courthouse in 1978. Today, the building remains one of the county’s most recognizable landmarks and a lasting symbol of its history.
The Landmarks Commission will be developing a long-term strategy for the courthouse’s restoration and future use. Its responsibilities will include evaluating the building’s restoration needs, funding opportunities, and gathering public support as plans move forward.
County officials said preserving the courthouse is a priority because of its historical and cultural significance. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the early 1980s, recognizing both its architectural value and its role in the development of Clay County. It remains the only property in the county listed on the National Register.
The newly formed commission will operate independently from the Clay County Historical Society, though the two organizations are expected to work closely together throughout the restoration process. Both groups share a common goal of preserving and promoting Clay County’s heritage for future generations.
According to the Clay County Commission, the restoration effort will focus on maintaining the courthouse’s history while exploring opportunities for community use, educational programming, heritage tourism, and economic development.
“The Historic Clay County Courthouse is more than just a building; it is a testament to our county’s rich history and the generations of citizens who have called Clay County home,” the Clay County Commission said in a statement. “By appointing the Landmarks Commission, we are taking an important step toward preserving this treasured landmark and ensuring its continued role in our community for future generations.”
Community involvement is expected to play an important role in shaping the courthouse’s future. Officials said residents, local organizations, and historical preservation advocates will have opportunities to provide input as restoration plans are developed.
The Clay County Commission said it looks forward to partnering with the Landmarks Commission, the Clay County Historical Society, and community members to restore and preserve the historic courthouse as an important symbol of Clay County’s heritage.
